Mississippi State played in last year's NCAA tournament, losing in the First Four. The Tigers missed the postseason entirely after a 14-19 campaign in 2022-23 after playing in three straight editions of March Madness. The winner of Thursday's game advances to the quarterfinals and a date with top-seeded Tennessee on Friday afternoon. It's been 20 years since the Bulldogs won the SEC tournament while LSU cut down the nets in 2019.

The Tigers closed the regular season on Saturday with an 84-80 victory over visiting Missouri. Trae Hannibal scored 24 points in the win and Tyrell Ward came off the bench for 14 points. Jordan Wright averages 15.1 points and 5.0 rebounds and Will Baker gets 11.4 points and 5.0 boards per game.
Mississippi State fell at home on Saturday to then-No. 17 South Carolina 93-89 in overtime. Josh Hubbard poured in 28 points and Cameron Matthews finished with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Hubbard scores 16.8 points per game while Tolu Smith III averages 16.3 points and 8.2 rebounds.
LSU is 114-104 all-time against the Bulldogs, who have won the last two meetings. Mississippi State's 87-67 rout of the Tigers in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, on Feb. 24 was its last victory, with Hubbard scoring 32 points. Hannibal led the Tigers with 22 points.
